Over 160 Dead as Massive Flooding Strikes Nepal and Tibet

Disastrous flooding across Nepal and Tibet has claimed more than 160 lives, with hundreds of people still reported missing. According to Nepalese police, rescue workers have recovered 157 bodies from rubble and floodwaters. Across the border in Tibet's Gyirong County, Chinese authorities confirmed three fatalities and the disappearance of 265 residents.

The missing include numerous foreign nationals: 142 citizens from India, 47 from the United States, 34 from Australia, 33 from the United Kingdom, 24 from Canada, and 9 from South Korea. Tourists from Malaysia, the Netherlands, Portugal, and South Africa are also among those unaccounted for.

Initial reports suggested an earthquake triggered the glacier collapse. However, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) clarified that the 5.2-magnitude tremor recorded by seismographs was not the cause, but rather the result of a massive volume of ice and rock crashing into the valley floor.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres announced the mobilization of organization personnel and resources to assist affected areas in Nepal. Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized that taking every possible measure to locate and rescue the missing remains the most urgent task.
