On August 31, President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sadyr Japarov and President of the People's Republic of China Xi Jinping held an official meeting at the new presidential residence "Yntymak Ordo" in Bishkek. During bilateral negotiations, the leaders discussed expanding high-level political trust, trade, economic, and investment cooperation, as well as executing major infrastructure initiatives.
The talks covered aligning national development strategies, advancing the Belt and Road Initiative, exchanging governance practices, and deepening interaction within the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).
Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov highlighted the elevated status of bilateral relations:
"In a short historical span, our relations have reached the level of a comprehensive strategic partnership in a new era and stand today at an unprecedented historical height. I can confidently state that cooperation between our countries has entered a new 'golden era' of its development."
For his part, Chinese President Xi Jinping highly commended the state of Kyrgyz-Chinese relations, noting the high degree of mutual political trust and dynamic practical cooperation. He emphasized that joint efforts between the two nations make a significant contribution to ensuring peace, stability, and sustainable development across the region.
Following the talks, the parties signed:
-
The Treaty on Eternal Good-Neighborliness, Friendship, and Cooperation;
-
The Joint Declaration on the Qualitative Development of Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in a New Era;
-
A series of important bilateral and inter-agency documents.
Additionally, an agreement was concluded to build a highway bridge over the Uzengu-Kuush River near the Bedel checkpoint on the Kyrgyz-Chinese border.
According to the Kyrgyz Presidential Administration, special emphasis was placed on developing the Bedel border crossing and constructing the 150-kilometer Barskoon–Bedel highway. Implementing these strategic projects will bolster Kyrgyzstan’s transit potential, expand transport connectivity, and establish a new logistics corridor between China and Central Asia.
Construction of the Barskoon–Bedel highway commenced on August 26 of last year with a five-year implementation timeline. The road is scheduled for full operational launch in 2030.
