Research shows that singing not only lifts the spirits but also provides significant health benefits. Singing in groups or choirs, in particular, has been found to offer both psychological and physical advantages, reports the BBC.

Alex Street, a researcher at the Cambridge Institute for Music Therapy, explains that singing is a cognitive, physical, emotional, and social activity. Group singing strengthens social bonds, and even strangers can develop a sense of closeness after singing together for just an hour.

Physically, singing helps stabilize heart rate, lower blood pressure, boost the immune system, and reduce stress. This process stimulates the vagus nerve, releasing endorphins that promote well-being and alleviate pain.

Dr. Keir Philip, a respiratory medicine specialist at Imperial College, notes that singing, combined with specific breathing exercises, improves the quality of life for patients with chronic respiratory conditions. Additionally, group singing has been shown to enhance speech and breathing abilities in individuals with Parkinson’s disease.

Experts consider singing a form of physical activity comparable to a brisk walk, benefiting both the heart and lungs. Therefore, everyone can improve their health by adding their voice, whether singing alone or in a group.
