AI Handbag Ads: Valentino Faces Backlash
Photo Author: Valentino/YouTube
Italian luxury fashion house Valentino has faced criticism after posting AI-generated images to promote its new DeVain handbag, reports BBC. Some users described the ads as “uninteresting,” “cheap,” and “lazy.”
The brand shared the AI-created ad on its Instagram page, where models and the DeVain handbag are blended together in striking visuals. In some shots, models appear to emerge from a gold-colored handbag, while in others, the brand logo transforms into human arms, eventually merging into a swirl of bodies.
New Creative Possibilities
Like other creative industries, the fashion sector has begun using AI tools. These tools allow for quick image and video production, helping reduce production and advertising costs. They are also said to improve processes such as design, manufacturing, and sizing.
However, there are concerns that the technology could displace human workers or reduce the quality of fashion products.
Anne-Liese Prem, Head of Cultural Insights at the creative digital agency Loop, told the BBC:
“The main issue is not the technology itself, but what it replaces. When AI enters a brand’s visual identity, people perceive it as choosing efficiency over artistry. Even if the outcome is creative, audiences often read it as cost-saving disguised as innovation.”
