The UK government is considering an Australian-style ban on social media for children under 16, which could be introduced later this year. The initiative is part of Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government policy to strengthen digital safety, Reuters reports.

A public consultation on the matter began last month, with plans underway to introduce rapid legislative amendments. In addition, gaps in coverage for certain AI chatbots under the 2023 Online Safety Act are set to be addressed.

Technology Minister Liz Kendall stated that some AI systems do not currently meet child safety standards, and proposals to close these gaps will be presented by June. The new measures will also include restrictions on “stranger interactions” on gaming platforms and preventing the sharing of explicit images.

The government will require technology companies to ensure compliance with the law. Experts note that while the initiative aims to protect children, it may have implications for adults’ digital rights.
