The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced plans to implement rigorous screenings of immigrants' past statements and political views to identify "extremist positions." According to reports from Reuters, these changes align with directives from the Donald Trump administration, focusing on applicants seeking Green Cards or U.S. citizenship.

The new policy dictates that public statements, including social media activity, will be scrutinized for potential disqualifying factors. Applicants may face denials based on their political stances, specifically regarding participation in pro-Palestinian protests, criticism of Israel, or the desecration of the U.S. flag. DHS spokesperson Zak Kaler emphasized that the primary focus remains on identifying support for terrorist ideologies, incitement of violence, or providing material support to designated terrorist organizations.

While officials maintain these measures are necessary for national security, the initiative has sparked significant backlash. U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen and various human rights organizations have voiced concerns, stating that basing immigration decisions on political opinions poses a severe threat to freedom of speech. Critics argue that such broad ideological vetting could lead to discriminatory practices against individuals exercising their fundamental civil liberties.
