U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that the American military conducted airstrikes against Islamic State (ISIS) targets in northwestern Nigeria. In a statement posted on the social media platform Truth Social, he emphasized that the operation was "powerful and devastating."

According to the head of the White House, this specific group has been responsible for the brutal killings of civilians, primarily Christians, for many years.

"I previously warned these terrorists that if they did not stop the slaughter of Christians, they would face severe accountability. Tonight, that warning was carried out," Donald Trump wrote, commenting on the U.S. actions.

He further stated that under his leadership, the United States will not allow radical Islamic terrorism to strengthen or expand. Trump reminded that since early November, various military scenarios regarding Nigeria had been under consideration, including the possibility of troop deployment and airstrikes. He noted that in December, the U.S. also imposed partial entry restrictions for Nigerian citizens.

According to CNN, 2025 has seen repeated mass killings in Nigeria motivated by religious grounds. In April, the country's President, Bola Tinubu, reported at least 40 deaths following an attack on a community of Christian farmers in the north. In June, according to human rights organizations, more than 100 people were killed in the village of Yelwat, which has a predominantly Christian population.

While the American side has not officially disclosed the specific details of the operation, Trump’s statements serve as the strongest public signal yet of Washington’s readiness to take forceful action against terrorist groups operating in the region.
