During a meeting on the development of the capital, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stated that the issue of building a new airport must be thoroughly examined to enhance the transport and transit potential of Astana.

According to the President, the Government and the city Akimat (administration) must work together in this direction and submit concrete proposals.

"I instruct the Government, together with the Akimat, to carefully study this issue and submit a specific proposal. Recently, we considered the development of fully-fledged aviation hubs in our country, which includes the ongoing work regarding the capital's airport," said Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

However, the Head of State pointed out several challenges hindering the development of aviation hubs. According to him, the volume of aviation fuel produced in Kazakhstan is insufficient.

"The volume of aviation fuel produced in Kazakhstan is inadequate. This situation may hinder the development of aviation hubs. Therefore, the Government must take concrete measures to increase the production of aviation fuel," the President added.

In this context, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev noted that the possibility of building a new oil refinery could also be considered. The Head of State mentioned that such a decision has its own advantages and disadvantages; therefore, the Government must define its clear position and make a final decision on the matter.
