TikTok has signed a major agreement to continue operating in the United States. Under the deal, the U.S. division of the app will be separated from its main headquarters in China and operate as an independent company. The primary goal is to fully protect American users’ personal data from Chinese government access, BBC reports.

Under the new rules, TikTok’s video recommendation system and algorithms will be rebuilt based solely on U.S. user data. This means the app’s functionality and the way videos are shown could change for American users.

It’s worth noting that if China’s ByteDance had not transferred its business to American investors, TikTok was slated to be completely banned in the U.S. in January 2025.

However, President Donald Trump delayed the decision several times, ultimately allowing this compromise, aimed at addressing lawmakers’ primary concern that citizens’ data could be accessed by China.
