A massive seismic shift has occurred on South Korea's political stage: the Seoul Central District Court has handed down a verdict against Kim Keon-hee, the wife of former President Yoon Suk-yeol. According to the court ruling, which brings a high-profile state-level corruption scandal to a close, Kim has been sentenced to one year and eight months in prison, reports Yonhap.

According to the details of the case, the court found Kim Keon-hee guilty of accepting luxury gifts - specifically a Chanel handbag and a Graff necklace—from a representative of the Unification Church in exchange for business favors. In its ruling, the court emphasized that the defendant exploited her status as the spouse of a high-ranking official for personal gain, thereby undermining public trust in government institutions.

However, the court acquitted Kim on more serious charges, including involvement in a stock price manipulation scheme and violations of the Political Funds Act. Although the prosecution had sought a 15-year prison term, the court significantly reduced the sentence due to a lack of sufficient evidence on those specific counts. In addition to the prison term, she has been ordered to forfeit 12.8 million won (approximately 4 474 000 тг).

This event marks an unprecedented moment in South Korean history. With this verdict, Yoon Suk-yeol and Kim Keon-hee have become the first former presidential couple in the nation's history to be criminally convicted and detained simultaneously. Previously, Yoon Suk-yeol himself was sentenced to five years in prison for his 2024 "martial law bid."

Currently, both the prosecution and the defense have expressed dissatisfaction with the verdict and are considering filing appeals. Kim Keon-hee, who has been held in a detention center since August, continues to deny all charges against her.
