Safety-Focused: CTS Explains Role of New Traffic Signals in Astana LRT Safety Protocol

Residents of the Astana have been sharing photos on social media showing newly installed traffic lights along the LRT (Light Rail Transit) line.

The City Transportation Systems (CTS) company has clarified the purpose of these installations. A total of 187 LED traffic lights have been positioned across LRT stations, track sections (inter-station spans), and depots.

According to the CTS press service, while the primary operation of the trains is handled by an automated system, the physical signals serve critical secondary functions:

The traffic lights provide manual or override control of train movements during emergency situations. They are utilized during technical maneuvers and maintenance work within the depots and on the tracks. The system acts as an additional layer of protection to ensure the maximum safety of both passengers and technical personnel.

Astana’s LRT line has been equipped with 187 LED traffic lights to bolster safety. Although the network is primarily automated, CTS explained that these signals are essential for shunting operations and emergency train control, providing a critical backup safety layer for the transit system.
