Rare Cosmic Event: SpaceX Rocket Set to Impact the Moon

A spent upper stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket traveling at approximately 8,700 km/h (5,400 mph) is expected to collide with the lunar surface on August 5, according to reports by the BBC. NASA confirmed that the rocket component, originally launched in January 2025, drifted off course and accidentally entered a collision trajectory with Earth's natural satellite.

Scientists project that the four-ton booster - roughly the size of a five-story building - will strike near the Einstein Crater. The crash is anticipated to carve out a new crater over 17 meters in diameter while hurling a giant dust plume up to 50 kilometers into space.

Space researchers reassure that the event poses zero danger to Earth. Due to the Moon's lack of atmosphere and low gravity, the impact offers a unique scientific opportunity. Observatories across the United States and South Korea, along with orbiting lunar probes, will closely track the flash, plume dynamics, and crater formation.

This incident highlights the growing challenge of space clutter surrounding Earth. Data from the European Space Agency (ESA) shows that more than 54,000 human-made objects larger than 10 centimeters currently float in orbit. A similar collision occurred in 2022 when a discarded Chinese rocket booster struck the far side of the Moon.
