Passenger Evades Payment from Deaf-Mute Taxi Driver

An incident involving a passenger who exploited the communication limitations of a deaf-mute taxi driver has elicited substantial attention on social media. A video circulated on the platform Threads depicts a man who arranged a ride from Kokshetau to Astana and, upon arrival, departed without remitting payment for the service.

“The individual took advantage of the driver’s inability to hear and speak. The driver awaited payment from the passenger’s sister, as he had indicated she would settle the fare. It is disconcerting that individuals exploit such vulnerabilities, assuming that no consequences will ensue,” commented the uploader of the video.

The post generated widespread public reaction. Social media users expressed indignation and attempted to ascertain the passenger’s identity. Several users indicated willingness to personally compensate the driver for the cost of the journey.

Although such behavior does not constitute criminal or administrative liability, the Akmola Regional Police Department responded to the report. Authorities confirmed the individual’s identity and subsequently took him into police custody for questioning.

“The subject in the video is a 30-year-old resident of Kokshetau. He acknowledged undertaking the journey on November 24 and exiting the vehicle without fulfilling the payment obligation,” the police stated.

The individual attributed his actions to financial constraints, explaining:

“I was aware of my obligation to pay but lacked the necessary funds. I had assured that my sister would transfer the payment, but the arrangement was not executed. I am profoundly remorseful,” he stated during the interview.

Following preventive intervention by law enforcement, the passenger reimbursed the driver in full.

“He fully compensated the fare and issued a formal apology. No legal liability is prescribed for this conduct,” the department clarified.

The police emphasized the importance of ethical conduct in addition to legal compliance:

“We urge citizens to adhere not only to statutory obligations but also to fundamental moral principles. Mutual respect should underpin all interpersonal interactions,” the department concluded.
