Over 250 Personnel Mobilized in Search for Two Missing Servicemen in the Caspian Sea

Around-the-clock search and rescue operations remain underway in the Caspian Sea for two military personnel missing following a severe coastal storm. The large-scale operation involves 252 personnel, 37 military divers, 14 naval vessels and cutters, alongside more than 20 aircraft, including four helicopters and specialized ground equipment.

The search operation is being conducted under the direct mandate of the Government Commission chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbayev, with Minister of Defense Dauren Kossanov overseeing field coordination on site. An operational headquarters has been established, uniting representatives from the Ministry of Defense, the Border Service of the National Security Committee (NSC), the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the Mangystau Regional Administration.

Rescue teams are conducting comprehensive sweeps of the sea area, coastal zones, and adjacent regions, supported by continuous aerial reconnaissance. Concurrently, criminal proceedings are underway, with a dedicated commission working to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. Comprehensive financial and psychological support is being provided to the victims and the families of the deceased.

The incident occurred on September 24 during a combat training exercise when a sudden weather deterioration and high winds swept 17 service members into open waters. To date, three personnel have been rescued, 12 fatalities confirmed, and active search efforts continue for the remaining two missing soldiers.
