Kazakhstan’s road safety monitoring system has been updated. Starting March 12, automated traffic cameras began recording new types of violations, following amendments to Article 31 of the Administrative Code, according to informburo.kz.

Serik Shumaev, a representative of the Almaty City Administrative Police, said the changes do not introduce new prohibitions for drivers. The legal requirements remain the same, with only the method of detecting violations updated. The main goal is to improve discipline on the roads and enhance safety.

Previously, cameras monitored six types of violations: speeding, running a red light, ignoring road signs or markings, improper stopping or parking, illegal overtaking, and failure to yield to pedestrians.

Now, automated systems can also detect using a phone while driving and not wearing a seatbelt. Additionally, the system can identify expired technical inspections and missing insurance through integration with state databases.

In some cases, where the law allows, the system can issue automatic warnings to drivers. The Ministry of Internal Affairs has clarified that reports circulating on social media claiming that cameras will also penalize pedestrians are false.
