Maulen Ashimbayev Comments on Prospects of Becoming Speaker of the Renewed Parliament

Senate Chairman Maulen Ashimbayev responded to journalists’ question: ‘Do you intend to become the Speaker of the renewed Parliament?

Ashimbayev characterized the topic as a prematurely raised issue, emphasizing that the primary focus at present is to complete legislative work with quality and diligence.

“Currently, the discussion process is ongoing. We still have 2026, 2027, and 2028 ahead. Therefore, I do not believe it is the right time to make predictions. My attention, and that of my colleagues, is fully concentrated on fulfilling this year’s responsibilities. We need to adopt the most important legislation within this year. This is our significant responsibility,” stated the Senate Chair.

He further described some discussions as “opinions at the level of speculation.”

“Our mandate is to ensure that, within the remaining time this year, we pass legislation that is vital for the nation. All of our colleagues are focused on this objective. Naturally, if new proposals or perspectives emerge, we are ready to consider them,” Ashimbayev added.

Previously, the President proposed, in his Address to the Nation, an initiative to establish a unicameral Parliament. Currently, the working group on parliamentary reform is engaged in implementing this initiative.
