Venezuela’s opposition leader, Maria Corina Machado, presented U.S. President Donald Trump with a Nobel Peace Prize medal during their first face-to-face meeting. The American leader shared the news on his social media platform, Truth Social.

In his post, Trump described Maria Corina Machado as an "extraordinary woman" and stated that meeting her was a "great honor." According to Trump, the Venezuelan politician gifted him the Nobel Peace Prize medal in recognition of his service. However, Trump did not specify whether he had officially accepted the award.

For her part, Maria Corina Machado called the day a "historic moment" for Venezuelans. She emphasized that Donald Trump is committed to the freedom of political prisoners in Venezuela and the rights of its citizens, noting his understanding that the republic could become a potential partner for the United States.

Notably, following the detention of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in Caracas by U.S. special forces, Donald Trump had initially declined to back Maria Corina Machado as the country's new leader. Despite this, the movement led by Machado has maintained that they were the rightful winners of the 2024 elections.

Currently, Donald Trump has established contact with Delcy Rodríguez, who is serving as the acting interim head of state in Venezuela. Delcy Rodríguez previously served as Vice President under the former administration.

It is worth noting that Donald Trump has expressed his desire to receive the Nobel Peace Prize on several occasions in the past.
