The press service of the West Kazakhstan Regional Courts has reported a case of unlawful prosecution by law enforcement agencies.

In 2023, a resident of the West Kazakhstan Region spent six months in pretrial detention and an additional month under house arrest. It was later determined that no crime had been committed. Although the criminal case was closed, the man suffered significant moral trauma. Following his release, he filed a lawsuit, resulting in a court order for the state to pay:

  • 3 million KZT in compensation for moral harm;
  • 4 million KZT for material damages;
  • 700,000 KZT to cover legal representation fees.

The victim, identified in official reports only as "M.", stated that throughout the investigation, he was under constant stress and subjected to psychological pressure from the criminal prosecution authorities. Furthermore, the ordeal led to the loss of his job and forced him to change his place of residence.

The court ruled that these payments are necessary to compensate for the violation of the citizen's rights and the hardships endured during the period of illegal detention.
