Is Tokayev Preparing a New Role for Himself?

In an interview with the Turkistan newspaper, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev addressed rumors suggesting that parliamentary reforms are being carried out to strengthen the position of the Parliament Speaker so that he could occupy the role in the future.

The President dismissed such speculations as "idle talk," stating that they fundamentally contradict his political principles. According to him, Kazakhstan will remain a state with a presidential form of government.

"I announced the concept of 'A Strong President – An Influential Parliament – An Accountable Government' eight years ago, even before coming to Akorda. Changing the fundamental system of state governance for personal gain would be irresponsible and immoral," said Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

The Head of State emphasized that all reforms of critical importance to the country are strictly adopted through national referendums. He noted that there are no hidden agendas behind the parliamentary changes and that political reforms will continue.
