Experts from Malwarebytes have discovered that the personal data of 17.5 million users has been leaked onto the darknet. Hackers are currently actively discussing this database.

What exactly was stolen?

This is not just a list of logins, but highly sensitive information:

• Full names and nicknames;

• Email addresses and phone numbers;

• Location data.

Hackers can use this data to send fraudulent messages in your name or hijack your account using the "forgot password" function.

If you receive suspicious emails from Instagram or if someone contacts you on your behalf, be cautious.

Experts urgently recommend the following safety measures:

1. Update your Instagram password immediately.

2. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) — this is the primary barrier for hackers.

3. Most importantly: do not click on suspicious links sent to your email or Direct messages, as these may be traps designed to collect your data.
