Vehicle registration plates can now be inherited in Kazakhstan. These changes were introduced by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and the new rules will come into effect on May 25, 2026, kolesa.kz reports.

According to the new regulations, the scope of re-registering previously used license plates will be expanded. They can now be issued to government agencies and diplomats, as well as to the close relatives of the former owner—including parents, children, siblings, grandparents, grandchildren, and legally married spouses. Additionally, plates can be officially registered to heirs through inheritance.

Prior to this, the re-issuance of previously used license plates was permitted only for high-demand "VIP" plates.

The new rules will also expand the list of "fancy" license plates. Consecutive digit combinations such as 101, 121, 131, and others will be added to this category. Furthermore, plates featuring identical letter combinations will also be made available.

The state fee for such plates has already been established. For instance, the new digit combinations will cost 15 Monthly Calculation Indices (MCI), which amounts to 64,875 tenge in 2026. Meanwhile, plates with matching letters will require a fee of 72 MCI, totaling 311,400 tenge.

These new updates will provide vehicle owners with greater opportunities to retain their license plates and pass them on to their loved ones.
