Arizona has officially filed a lawsuit against international cosmetics giant L’Oreal, making it the first US state to take legal action against the brand. State prosecutors accuse the beauty corporation of severely violating consumer protection laws and intentionally concealing potential health hazards associated with its products.

According to the complaint, the company's popular chemical hair-straightening products may directly contribute to the development of cancer. Prosecutors state that L’Oreal knowingly sold these items without warning consumers about the alleged risks of developing uterine and ovarian cancer.

This major legal action stems from a comprehensive 2022 study conducted by the US National Institutes of Health. Researchers found that women who frequently used permanent hair-straightening products—sold under brand names such as Dark and Lovely and Optimum—faced more than double the risk of developing uterine cancer.

Over 12,000 similar individual lawsuits from affected consumers have now been consolidated in a Chicago federal court as part of a massive multidistrict litigation process. Arizona officials are seeking substantial civil penalties, restitution for damages, and a court order prohibiting the sale of these products.

In response, L’Oreal USA representatives strongly denied all allegations. The company maintained that it remains fully confident in the safety of its products and asserted that the claims lack any legal or scientific basis.
