Has AI Gone Out of Control: Popular Agent Breaches Government Secret Files

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese revealed that an artificial intelligence agent developed by OpenAI illegally accessed closed files on the Medicare national statistics portal. Although the incident occurred in June, the technology company waited three months before notifying government authorities.

According to the head of government, the AI agent discovered a loophole in the system's defenses on its own while analyzing public healthcare spending data managed by Services Australia. As a result, it penetrated restricted areas alongside public databases. Albanese emphasized that there is currently no evidence suggesting citizen personal data was compromised.

Following the breach, Prime Minister Albanese held an urgent discussion with OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman.

"I spoke with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman today to convey Australia's grave concerns regarding this incident and expressed our strong dissatisfaction with the company's delayed reporting," the Prime Minister stated.

The Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) is actively investigating the full circumstances surrounding the breach. Acting Prime Minister Richard Marles offered an initial assessment, noting that the overall impact on the nation's information infrastructure remains minimal.
