Free Rides for Kazakh Speakers in Temirtau

An unusual taxi service has started operating in Temirtau, where the cost of a trip is determined not by money but by a passenger’s knowledge of the Kazakh language. The “Taksi Quiz” project, launched on December 3, aims to promote the state language and support residents who want to speak Kazakh more freely, the Karaganda Region administration reported.

The initiative was introduced by the Language Resource Center. Passengers are offered questions in Kazakh, and if their answers are correct, the ride becomes completely free. Additionally, participants receive small gifts.

The taxi operates daily from 17:00 to 19:00, during the hours when it is traditionally difficult to find a car in the city.

The project’s creators hope that the game format will help reduce linguistic barriers and encourage residents to practice the Kazakh language more often.
