A armed attack at an Islamic center in San Diego, California, has left five people dead, including the two teenage assailants. Details of the incident were reported by Fox News, citing official data from the police department.
According to law enforcement authorities, the suspects were aged 17 and 19. San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl stated during a press briefing that the two teenagers were found dead inside a vehicle stopped not far from the scene after the attack. According to the preliminary version of the investigation, the suspects committed suicide. It was clarified that law enforcement officers did not discharge their weapons during the special operation.
Three adult members of the Islamic center were killed as a result of this crime, which is being treated as a potential hate crime based on religious animosity. One of the victims was a mosque security guard. According to the police chief, the guard acted in a timely manner and blocked the attackers from penetrating deeper into the building. By doing so, he prevented a higher number of casualties among the other worshippers and children who were inside.
The area where the incident occurred is currently completely cordoned off, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) along with local detectives are conducting a joint search and investigative operation. The identities of the victims have not yet been released due to the interests of the investigation.
