Kazakhstan's tennis star Elena Rybakina has raised fresh concerns among her fans. While reaching the final of the Cincinnati Open offered her a prime opportunity to claim the WTA world No. 1 ranking, an unfortunate, last-minute injury disrupted those plans, keeping her at world No. 2 for now. Adding to the setback, Rybakina has officially withdrawn from the mixed doubles event at the US Open. She was originally slated to partner with America's Taylor Fritz, but Jessica Pegula will now take her place in the draw.
The hard-court swing leading into New York has been filled with major developments. In the Cincinnati semifinals, Pegula secured a hard-fought victory over Iga Swiatek with a score of 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, causing the Polish player to slide to No. 8 in the WTA rankings. However, Pegula ultimately fell in the final to her compatriot Coco Gauff, losing 4-6, 4-6. Meanwhile, 31-year-old Yulia Putintseva failed to qualify for the WTA 500 event in Monterrey. After defeating Victoria Rodriguez in the opening round, she succumbed to 20-year-old Maya Joint in the second round, 6-0, 3-6, 1-6. Elsewhere, Anna Danilina has paired up with Japan's Miyu Kato for the Monterrey event after her former partner, Serbia's Aleksandra Krunic, shifted her focus to mixed doubles. Danilina and Kato enter the tournament as the fourth-seeded duo.
Anticipation is building at the legendary New York courts as the final Grand Slam of the year approaches. Running from August 23 to September 13, the historic tournament holds the distinction of being the only Major played without interruption since its inception in 1881. Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka enter the event as the defending champions. Tennis enthusiasts can look forward to an action-packed few weeks filled with intense matchups and potential upsets.
