Elena Rybakina Misses Her Opportunity to Claim World No. 1 Ranking

The quarterfinal match of the WTA 1000 tournament in Cincinnati, USA, took an unfortunate turn for Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina. Standing just steps away from the world No. 1 ranking, the Kazakhstani star was forced to retire due to a leg injury during her clash against Poland's Iga Swiatek. The match came to an abrupt end in the opening set with Swiatek leading 4-1.

Following the encounter, Iga Swiatek expressed heartfelt support for her opponent:

"It was heartbreaking to see Elena get injured. She was right on the verge of taking the top spot. However, with the US Open right around the corner, her health comes first, and I truly hope she makes a quick recovery."

Had Rybakina reached the final in Cincinnati, she would have surpassed Belarus's Aryna Sabalenka to capture the WTA World No. 1 spot. The athlete is now setting her sights on regaining full fitness ahead of the season's final Grand Slam, the US Open, running from August 30 to September 13.
