Ebola outbreak escalates: dozens dead, hundreds infected

The World Health Organization has expressed concern over the resurgence of the Ebola outbreak in Africa. According to data as of June 3, the virus has been detected in more than 340 people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with 60 patients having deceased. Meanwhile, in Uganda, the disease has been confirmed in nine people, and one person has died.
According to WHO estimates, approximately 115 million dollars will be needed over the next three months to halt the spread of the epidemic. This marks the 17th Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the third largest in terms of scale.
A matter of particular concern for specialists is that the outbreak is spreading via the Bundibugyo strain. There is currently no officially approved vaccine or specific treatment method against this type of virus. Experts state that 30 to 40 percent of those infected with this strain could die.
The prolonged armed conflicts in the eastern part of the country are further exacerbating the situation. As a result of the war, the work of medical personnel and humanitarian organizations has become more difficult, making it impossible to control the spread of the epidemic in certain regions.
The WHO warned that the mass displacement of the population increases the risk of the virus spreading to neighboring countries. The organization called on the international community to increase support to the region in order to prevent the expansion of the outbreak.
