Severe weather conditions continue to worsen in Sri Lanka, with the death toll rising to 334 as of Sunday evening, according to the Disaster Management Center, reports Xinhua via Qrnews.kz.

Around 370 people are reported missing, while more than one million residents have been affected by heavy rains, floods, and landslides. A total of 1,118,929 people from 309,607 families have been impacted, many losing homes and livelihoods.

In response, Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Education has temporarily suspended operations at all universities, higher education institutions, and vocational training centers under its supervision. Classes will remain halted until 8 December.

Authorities cited widespread transportation disruptions, damaged infrastructure, and ongoing safety risks as reasons for the suspension. The ongoing severe weather continues to hinder evacuations, mobility, and emergency response efforts, complicating recovery operations.
