The term of office of Imangali Tasmagambetov, Secretary-General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), is coming to an end. At the meeting of member states scheduled for December 27 in Bishkek, the organization will discuss a new candidate to replace him.

During the meeting, priority topics will include combating drug trafficking and illegal migration, strengthening regional security, and preparations for Russia’s chairmanship of the organization in 2026. At the end of the session, participants are expected to adopt a joint declaration outlining common positions on security issues.

Political Background

Imangali Tasmagambetov, a former Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, Minister of Defense, and mayor of both Astana and Almaty, was appointed CSTO Secretary-General in 2023. His appointment at the time sparked varied public reactions.

Controversial Statements

Earlier this year, Tasmagambetov faced criticism after an interview with Russian media regarding the war in Ukraine. He later clarified that his words were misrepresented and stated that he was “not advocating for the interests of any country.”

Member states plan to agree on a new Secretary-General by the end of the yearthrough a joint decision.
