The United States may soon see the rise of compact mini cars after President Donald Trump’s visit to Japan. Powerful SUVs, which dominate American roads, might give way to Japan’s popular small vehicles known as kei cars — four-seater cars with an engine capacity of just 660 cc, reports Breaking News English.

President Trump described these vehicles as “cheap, safe, fuel-efficient, and amazing,” adding that he approved their production in the US. According to him, all regulatory barriers that restrict kei car manufacturing should be removed.

In Japan, kei cars make up one-third of all new vehicle sales and are ideal for narrow streets. However, for them to be allowed on US roads, special legislation must be passed.

To remove barriers in vehicle production, Trump instructed Secretary of Housing and Transportation Sean Duffy to take action. Duffy stated:

“If Toyota or any other company wants to produce smaller, cheaper, and more fuel-efficient cars, we have eliminated all obstacles for them to sell these vehicles in the United States.”
