At Least 13 Dead Following Powerful 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake in Japan

At least 13 people have died following a powerful magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck Kumamoto Prefecture on Japan's Kyushu Island, according to Reuters. The quake originated at a depth of 10 kilometers; however, no tsunami warnings were issued. The natural disaster caused extensive damage to infrastructure, roads, and bridges, leaving tens of thousands of homes without electricity.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated that search and rescue operations are proceeding under strict time constraints, confirming that all government resources have been mobilized to extract survivors trapped under rubble.

Among the hardest-hit facilities was the recently renovated Aeon Mall Kumamoto. Following the tremor, a gas leak ignited a massive explosion inside the shopping center, causing a section of the building to collapse. Emergency responders pulled eight individuals from the debris, but two were pronounced dead. Between 20 and 30 employees remain unaccounted for. Separately, at a Nippon Paper Industries manufacturing plant, a collapsing smokestack severely injured several workers, with search efforts underway for seven additional missing personnel.

Regional healthcare infrastructure is experiencing severe strain due to the influx of injured residents. Power outages forced several hospitals to shift to emergency operations and temporarily halt new patient admissions. Local authorities advised more than 260,000 residents to relocate to evacuation centers. The crisis is compounded by ongoing fires, power failures affecting over 36,000 households, and high summer temperatures reaching up to +34°C (+93°F).

Major industrial operators in the region - including Honda, Tokyo Electron, and TSMC - were forced to temporarily suspend production at their local facilities. Experts warn of a high risk of strong aftershocks and potential landslides over the coming week, urging residents to maintain strict safety precautions.
