Astana LRT to Be Renamed "Tarlan Astana"

During a session of the city maslikhat (local representative body), a proposal was put forward to rename the light rail transit system to "Tarlan Astana."

The initiative was presented by Doszhan Isabek, Acting Head of the Department for Language Development and Archives of Astana. According to him, naming suggestions were submitted by city residents, public organizations, and the Writers' Union of Kazakhstan.

During a meeting of the city onomastics commission on June 3, members discussed several candidates, including options such as "Kyran," "Kulan," "Aspan," "Tarlan," among others. Following the discussion, the commission unanimously recommended the name "Tarlan Astana."

Isabek explained why this specific word was selected: in Kazakh culture, "Tarlan" symbolizes freedom, speed, strength, nobility, and reliability. Furthermore, the name is easy to pronounce, highly memorable, and well-suited for an international format.

The final decision to officially approve the new name is pending confirmation by the city maslikhat.
