Annual Cost of Maintaining a Single Inmate in Kazakhstan

The cost of maintaining a single inmate in Kazakhstan reaches up to 3 million tenge per year, according to the press service of the Prosecutor General's Office.

Currently, one in three of the 30,000 convicts in the country is a repeat offender. In light of this situation, the supervisory authority proposes a more effective organization of employment and social adaptation for prisoners.

To this end, the Prosecutor General's Office has initiated relevant legislative amendments. Under the new regulations, the functions of social reintegration (resocialization) will be assigned to local executive bodies (akimats). The coordination of this work will be transferred to the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Population, which has expressed its support for the initiative.

The Prosecutor General's Office is confident that such measures will facilitate the creation of a unified mechanism for social adaptation and have a positive impact on the level of public safety.
