A UN University Branch May Be Established in Almaty

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has proposed the creation of a regional branch of the United Nations University in Almaty. The Head of State emphasized that the country’s international reputation is directly linked to the results of its domestic development.

According to the President, responsible and well-calibrated domestic policies form the foundation for effective foreign diplomacy and strengthening Kazakhstan’s position on the global stage.

“I attach special importance to the development of education and international academic cooperation, especially in areas capable of accelerating global transformations. These priorities fully align with the mission of the United Nations University,” said Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

The President noted that this year, Kazakhstan launched the UN Regional Centre for Sustainable Development Goals for Central Asia and Afghanistan. He stated that this step laid the necessary groundwork for further expanding cooperation with the UN system in education and research.

“Building on this foundation, Kazakhstan is ready to establish a regional branch of the United Nations University in Almaty. Its activities could focus primarily on water and climate security, conflict prevention and peacebuilding, sustainable development, and artificial intelligence governance,” the President said.

In conclusion, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev emphasized Kazakhstan’s interest in further strengthening institutional partnerships between the United Nations University and leading domestic universities. This includes the development of joint research, academic exchanges, and specialist training programs.

“We are interested in expanding cooperation between the United Nations University and Kazakh universities in the fields of science, education, and workforce development,” added the Head of State.
