55 European Nations Threaten World Cup Boycott Over FIFA Privatization Plan

UEFA and all 55 member associations have resolved to boycott future FIFA tournaments - including the World Cup - if world football’s governing body moves forward with selling commercial stakes in its flagship events to private investors. The unified stance was reached during an emergency summit on July 30.

In an official statement, UEFA firmly rejected treating the World Cup as an investment commodity. The governing body emphasized that the tournament represents a shared football legacy built across generations by players, national teams, and fans, which must not be handed over to private entities.

European associations specified that their boycott remains conditional: national teams will refuse to participate in FIFA competitions unless the organization drops the proposal and formally guarantees that tournament governance will remain out of private hands.

UEFA sharply criticized the initiative for being drafted behind closed doors without adequate consultation among member federations. The union warned that introducing private capital threatens to prioritize commercial profit over sporting integrity when shaping competition policy.

The dispute stems from FIFA’s plan to launch a subsidiary dubbed FIFA Forward Enterprise and offer equity to external investors. While FIFA claims the venture will boost revenue destined for global football development, any structural change requires formal approval from its member associations.
