In Kazakhstan, the rules for authorization in government digital services are changing. The Ministry of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development, in collaboration with the General Prosecutor's Office, has strengthened measures against phone scammers who have repeatedly exploited vulnerabilities in the old system.

Previously, to access certain services, it was enough to know the citizen's phone number and intercept a one-time SMS code sent from the short number 1414. Criminals took advantage of this to gain access to personal data and government services.

Now, as clarified by the authorities, entry through the SMS gateway 1414 is protected by additional identification methods. Depending on the service, biometric identification (FaceID), digital signatures, or the eGov QR code are used. Starting in December, all platforms that have not implemented the new security requirements will be disconnected from the SMS gateway.

According to the ministry, the updated authorization scheme is expected to significantly reduce the number of fraudulent attempts and provide a higher level of protection for users of government services.
