Violence against women remains a widespread problem worldwide. In 2024, 83,000 women and girls were deliberately killed, with 60% of them killed by their intimate partners or close family members. For men, only 11% of killings involved intimate partners or family members. These figures come from a report by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and UN Women.

Digital violence has also increased significantly. Online abuse—including cyberbullying, trolling, sexual harassment, AI-generated deepfakes, doxxing, online sexual exploitation, and other harmful behaviors—primarily targets women, especially those active in politics, journalism, and activism. These online attacks can often lead to offline violence, physical harm, and even death.

To combat digital violence against women, UN Women has launched the 16 Days of Activism campaign (November 25 – December 10). Governments are urged to enforce laws to hold perpetrators accountable, technology companies must ensure platform safety, donors are encouraged to fund feminist organizations, and society as a whole should support survivors.
